JELSA is a small town and a
port sitauted on the north coast of Hvar. It is favourite destination of
many tourists luring with it’s beauty, position, sandy beches, thick
pine wood, vineyards and olive grows. It has indented coast, with many
coves and capes, where guests can find genuine pleasure and peace.
Eastern from the small town there is a beautiful sandy cove Mina, and on
the peninsula Glavica the bathing area Soline.
Pitava port was mentioned for the first time in the 14th century , and
as the fishermen’s village it was probably formed in the 15th century.
The parish church of St Fabijan and Sebastijan ( mentioned already in
the year 1331) gained its present configuration with the fotified apse
in the 16th century. In the northern part of the village there is a
square with the Renaissance and Baroque houses. At the square there is a
Baroque church of St John. Southern of Jelsa on gorska kosa plateau two
fortresses are settled: the medieval city-fortress Galesnik and the
Illyric-Greek fortress from the 4th century BC. The fortress was built
out of megalictic stone blocks, around the fortress there are piles
(rugged walls) with natural and hand made terraces, which indicates the
exsistance of houses used for living.
With the various accomodation - hotels, camps and apartments there is a
rich sport and recreational offer – courts for tennis, mini golf,
bowling , diving school, tennis school, water sports gear. In the city
you can rent a motor boat, a speed boat, bicycles, motor cycles and
cars.
In numerous restaurants and konobas there is a rich offer of sea
specialities , grill food and the famous Hvar vines. In the village you
can also find pizza places, caffe bars and clubs.
Jelsa is connected with Split and Bol on Brac island by ferryboat lines.
Its convenient location in central part of the island makes it an ideal
start point for numerous excursion. |
