Croatia - Island Vis
The island of Vis is the furthest Adriatic
island. It streches over the area of 90.3 km2 with the height above sea
level 587 meters (the tallest peak is named Hum). It is situated in the
central-Dalmatian archipelago, there are 13 places on the island- the
biggest ones are Vis, Komiza, Okljucna, Podhumlje, Stincica and Podstrazje.
Island Vis is one of the most beautiful Croatian islands characterized by virginal nature, crystal, blue sea, pebble and sandy
beaches, picturesque hidden bays, marvellous examples of sea flora and
fauna.
The sandy insular area is apt for vine
cultivating. Due to the natural advantage, the vineyards of Vis are among
the higly esteemed in Dalmatia. Aside for vine cultivating and agriculture,
inhabitants are engaged in fishing (the tinned fish factory in Komiža).
There is also the palm nursery-garden on the island.
Vis was inhabited in the New Stone Age. In the 1st century BC, it was under the rule of the Illyrian tribe Liburni. In the 4th
century BC, the
Tyrant of Siracuse, Dionisius the Older, founded the colony Issa on the
island. Later, it became an independent city-state, and even forged its own
money and founded its own colonies.
In the Middle Ages it often changed rulers, and
then for a long time
it was under the Venetian Republic. For the fear of the pirates, the
settlements were formed in the inland: the main settlement is Velo Selo.
Later, the larger settlements developed on the coast (Komiza and Luka of St.
Juraj - present town of Vis).
Numerous monuments dating back to the Ancient
Times testify its great history. There are the remains of the ancient town,
Roman baths, necropolis, and numerous Renaissance villas and churches. In
the Fishing Museum of Komiža there are the traditional wooden ships used for
fishing on the broad seas.
The island is famous for its virginal nature
since it was opened for guests not sooner then in 1989.
The sea bed near Vis is famous for its numerous
archeological locations and for its abundant sea flora and fauna. The
distance from the mainland provided the abundance of fish, shells and
molusks. It is possible to experience the sea world with diving instructors
and to see amphoras, ancient anchors, sunken boats, but also to enjoy in the
beautiful sea flora and fauna with marvellous corals, sponges, scabbard
fish,…
For its numerous bays and for its position at the
open sea, Vis is a famous tourist destination on the Adriatic.
There is a large number of restaurants and konobas (taverns), but also agrotourism is developed offering high
quality Dalmatinan cuisine, homemade wine and pleasant atmosphere.

famous for its numerous caves. The most famous one is Modra spilja (Blue
Cave), it is a natural phenomenon, frequented by tourists from all over the

A specific type of the vegetation is developed here due to the dry climate and
