Riviera Trogir -
Trogir

The historical town of Trogir is one of the
most attractive touristic destinations in Croatia and the best preserved
Romanesque-Gothic town of Central Europe. This "city-museum" is located
it the western entrance of the Kastela bay, 27 km from Split and 4 km
from the airport "Divulje". It lies on the islet between the shore and
the island Ciovo, connected by bridges. The city area is spread on the
northen shore of Ciovo, facing the islet.
The city's historic core, a unique monument of culture, has been on the
UNESCO World Heritage list since 1997.
This city has a high concetration of historical and cultural monuments
due to its long and stormy history. It has numerous narrow streets,
edificies and palaces, beautiful cathedrals, master pieces, art
collections that facinate and can leave no one indifferent.
In the 3rd century Greek colonists from the island of Vis founded
Tragurion at the place where today's Trogir stands.Tragurion eventually
developed into a major port. On the fall of the Roman Empire, it became
a part of the Bizantine Dalmatia. During the migration of Croats the
citizens of the destroyed Salona escaped to Trogir.
The old city's core was formed during the 13th and 15th centuries inside
the walls which were renovated during the Venetian rule in the 15th
century. The Venetians built two towers which have been preserved till
today: the Fortress Kamerlengo and Saint Mark's tower. The older,
eastern part of the city, has developed around the main square with the
cathedral, and Pasika, the western part of the city has developed later.
During the past, the city was one of the cultural centres of Dalmatia:
in the 13th century Master Radovan lived and worked here, later in the
15th century famous sculptors and constructors, humanists and
historitians (Ivan Lucius) also worked and lived in Trogir.
Coming from the north, one can enter through the gate of the late
Renessance (17th century) where the statue of the city patron, Beatific
Joh Ursini is situated. There is the cathedral of Saint Lawrence (13th –
16th century) with the Romanesque – Gothic elements situated in the main
square.
The most important work of the cathedral is the Portal of Master Radovan
– western portal, made by Master Radovan in 1240, finished in the 14th
century. It was made of sculptures and reliefs with about 100
characters. The Portal of Radovan is a unique example of, not just
Croatian Romanesque sculptures, but of the Northen-Adriatic sculptures.
There is a baptistery dating from 1464 in the cathedral, it is the most
important preserved work of the sculptor Andrija Alesi. There is also
the octogonal stone pulpit from the 13th century, Gothic choral seats,
ciborium from the 14th century, the paintings of the native and Italian
artists, the Gothic chapel of Saint Jeremy dating back to 1438, the
chapel of the Beatific Joh Ursini from the 15th century - the work of
Nikola Fiorentinac, it is still considered the most beautiful
Renessaince monument in Dalmatia. In the main square there is the City
Loggia from the 15th century, a tower with a clock and former
Renessaince church of Saint Sebastian.
From the main street, which is located by the Loggia, one can enter into
the oldest preserved church, the Early-Medieval church of Saint Barbara
dating from the 9th-10th century. The square is enclosed by Cipiko
palace. At the opposite side, the townhall from th e15th century is
situated. There is the Romanesque church of Saint John the Baptist from
the 14th century with the remains of th emedieval frescos and the vault
of the Cipiko family.
Further, along the shore, there are partly preserved walls with the
tower and a Renessaince city gates (1593).
The Greek relief with an image of the god Kairos is kept (a god of happy
moment) in the Benedictine convent (with the church of Saint Nicholas)
The relief derives probably from the 1st century BC. There is a Greek
inscription from the 4th-3rd century BC in the cloister, it is the
oldest epigraphic monument in the area of Trogir.
The fortress Kamerlengo is located on the south-west, in a former city
corner facing the land, it gained its today's appearance in the 15th
century.
The Saint Mark's tower from the 15th century is located on the
north-west corner of the city facing the land, it used to be connected
to the city walls with the Fortress Kamerlengo. Between the tower and
the citadel there is a "glorijet" – a classical-shaped, circular
colonnade built in 1809 paying homage to the French marshal Marmont, it
is one of the rare monuments of the French government in Dalmatia. The
part of the city which spread on the island of Ciovo contains several
interesting churches.
On the northen side of Ciovo, between the bridge of Trogir and Cubrijan
cape, facing the city, there is an ACI Marina Trogir with 162 berths and
35 shore storage places.
There are also numerous possibilities for sports and recreation. Fishing
nights are organized just like the Dalmatian folk nights and concerts,
it all takes place in the special city environment. In the numerous
restaurants the guests can indulge in some of the specialities of the
homemade food, especially the fish specialities. There is also an
entertaining night-life provided by a disco bar, numerous caffe bars...
Trogir riviera is characterized by mild Adriatic climate and
Mediterranean vegetation (vine, olive trees, fig trees, the aromatic and
medicinal herbs...). The coastline abounds in hidden, stone and pebble
beaches, islands and islets just ike numerous bays and coves. One of the
most beautiful bays is Stari Trogir (sandy, stone and pebble beaches),
Voluja, Krknjasi on Veli Drvenik, Vela Rina on Mali Drvenik, the area of
Saint Fumija – the island south-west from Ciovo, Saldun bay,
Racetinovac, Kancelirovac on the western part of Ciovo. There is also a
500 meters long pebble and sandy beach Pantan with pine woods. The beach
is located 1.5 km east from the center of Trogir. The most popular beach
of the Riviera of Trogir is 2 km long beach graveled in pebbles – the
beach Okrug, situated 5 km from the center of Trogir with numerous beach
bars and couple of restaurants.
Welcome to Trogir!
